Join the SPJ Oregon Board!

Help journalists in Oregon and SW Washington by joining the board of directors for the Society of Professional Journalists.

We’re looking for candidates to fill four open seats for two-year terms on the board. We’re also looking for candidates for the new Education Seat for college students or professors.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EDUCATION SEAT HERE

Our 9-member board of volunteers meets monthly to plan events such as the annual regional contest, training opportunities, and fundraisers to raise money to pay for lobbying efforts in Salem. You’ll get a hand in deciding what projects we focus on, and which policies we’d like to address to best support journalists in our region.

Being a board member means you volunteer about 10 hours a month, give or take. After the election, the board will elect new board officers for these positions: president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.

Positions on the board of directors are open to professional journalists, including freelancers, or people with extensive journalism experience such as retired journalists. You have to have an active membership with SPJ national and you have to be based in Oregon or SW Washington. You can renew or get a new SPJ membership here. We don’t charge extra dues for joining our chapter, but please ensure that you do join our chapter when you renew or join SPJ.

Our meetings are conducted virtually, so you can successfully be a board member from anywhere in the region.

If you have any questions, email us at info@spjoregon.com.

HOW TO APPLY

Board candidate applications are due by 11:59pm on Friday, Oct. 1. There are four open seats. These are two-year terms, so they’ll run until Sept. 2023.
